President's Challenge
History:
Starting in 2018, our president Sue P. issued a challenge for all members. The challenge is completely voluntary. The very first one was the "UFO Challenge" in which you had to sign up any time during the year with a picture of the "UnFinished Object" and description of what was left to be done. The Challenge was issued in January and members had nearly an entire year to complete it. Finished projects were brought for show and share at the December Christmas party. All who completed the challenge were awarded jelly rolls as prizes and those who didn't were award a boobie prize! Fun was had by all. The challenge was repeated in 2019 with the "Jelly Roll" challenge. Anyone could participate even if they did not receive a jelly roll the previous year. A lot of beautiful quilts were created from all those jelly rolls! Click here to see the finished quilts of the 2019 jelly roll quilts.
2020:
Our current President Merdie has also issued a challenge to be completed over the year. Again, the quilts will be presented at the Christmas party.
The 2020 challenge is the "Stash Challenge". The rule is to make a baby or lap size quilt using only fabric from your stash (no buying fabric for this). By doing this size they can be donated to Community Service if desired, but is not mandatory. So dig through your stashes, ladies and get to quilting!!
The challenge is over and the final quilts have been sent here to be posted due to the pandemic and our lack of meeting physically this year. Click here to see the finished quilts of the 2020 Stash Challenge.
2021:
Our new president, Dianna has issued a challenge to be completed over the course of this year. The finished quilts will be due in December at our Christmas party. They must be fully quilted and bound. There is no need to sign up; there will be no walk of shame! Dianna will check in in August to see how many are participating.
THE CHURN DASH CHALLENGE:
The challenge is to use the Churn Dash block (very old traditional block--google it!). You need to use at least one recognizable churn dash block in your quilt. It can be any size or shape (that's a clue). Think out of the box or not to make an innovative quilt using this block as your inspiration. If you go rogue, it must be recognizable somewhere in the quilt! Good luck and have fun!!
The challenge quilts were revealed at our December business meeting. Click here to see them. They are also posted on the Dec 2021 Show and Share page.
2022:
As president, my challenge to you is for you to challenge yourself! There are so many different techniques in the quilting world that even for experienced quilters there are new things to try. This challenge is for you to choose a technique that you have never done before and learn how to do it and make a quilt project using your newly learned skill. Resources for learning are plentiful—books, magazines, u tube videos, classes, other quilters. Quilt project can be any size.
For example: trapunto, a differ way to do applique, thread painting, free motion quilting, etc. For novice quilters, you could try a more complicated block/quilt such as a feathered star or New York Beauty.
By the September meeting I will be making a list of those of you who are participating. There will be a show and share and presentation of small gifts at the December Christmas party. When you present your project in December you will be asked to describe what you wanted to learn, what resources you used, and whether or not you are likely to use that new skill again....... the good news is that it does not need to be finished!
Dianna
Many members participated in this challenge which were revealed at our Christmas party. Some shared their quilts in earlier meetings as well. My apologies to the earlier showings whose pictures I cannot locate for this slide show. Click here to see them.
2023:
Our new president, Hazel, has issued at challenge for this year which is quite simple as far as rules go. Make a quilt, pillow, placemat, or any kind of fiber art that includes the use of plaid fabric. That's it! No size restrictions but the plaid must be recognizable in the article. They must be finished and will be presented at the December Christmas party.
We had many participants in the Plaid Challenge which were presented at the Christmas party in December. Click here to see the quilts.
2024: Our new president, Pam, has issued a challenge to make a quilt using curved piecing in a modern quilt. No size restrictions but there must be curved piecing (not applique) in the design. They must be finished and will be presented at the December Christmas party. Please sign up so Pam will know how many to expect.
