March 17, 2020 - Melisse Laing
Melisse Laing considers being an artist as her third career. She has a degree in communications and worked in radio/television/newspaper industries for several decades. She began making quilts while still writing for a newspaper and learned techniques from books and a few classes but mostly experimenting on her own. She became serious about making art quilts following her first Nancy Crow workshop in 1993. She has exhibited nationally and in Rio de Janeiro and Europe. She approaches the design and construction of her quilts much as an artist approaches a canvas. Each quilt is made up of individual pieces and/or blocks, but she visualizes it in its entirety. Although her work is rooted in traditional quilt making, she continually strives to create works that break the established mold.
Her newest quilts incorporate three-dimensional and unusual materials—burnished chain, paper, computer printing and found objects. They are leading her to new forms, and she finds herself constantly asking the question, “What if…?”
April 30, 2020 - Luncheon with the Piece Arch Quilters
Note: This is a Thursday, not Tuesday. For more information on this annual event, please click here.
May 19, 2020 - Larkin Van Horn
Textiles and mixed media, as art for the wall, three-dimensional structures, and extravagant jewelry, form the basis of Larkin's work. She draws her inspiration from a variety of sources: her own imagination and strong sense of drama, the colorists and abstract expressionists of the past, and the wild variety of the natural world. At times her work is a response to the grey Pacific Northwest winters; at other times it reflects the natural energy of spring and summer. She will bring a trunk show and explain her process.
Larkin will also be staying over to conduct a workshop on making vessels on May 20. Non-members are welcome to attend, but must sign up as there is a fee and limited space. Please fill in the form below if you want to attend the meeting on either or both days.
Guests are welcome to our programs for a $5.00 fee. If you have any questions about attending a program please submit your questions below.
